Financial Software Engineer (Entry Level)
Job Description
Financial Software Engineers at Galatea Associates begin working on specific components of a current software design and development effort for one of our major Wall Street clients. The responsibilities of a new Associate will vary depending on the project, but are likely to include client interaction, participation in collaborative design sessions, and coding and testing of program modules. A varied amount of travel may be required of a new Associate, depending on the project. As the company grows, responsibilities and involvement in all aspects of the organization will increase.
Successful candidates are bright, energetic, self-motivated, and share a sense of excitement about the opportunities that surround a growing company. They have solid technical skills and demonstrate enthusiasm for the business problems we strive to solve. We look for Associates who move easily from technology to technology, taking their accumulated business knowledge with them. We want Associates who are excited to learn about securities processing, and who want to completely understand what they are building. Familiarity with leading-edge technologies (Java, .NET, XML, SQL, Sybase, DB2), particularly object-oriented development techniques and three-tier computing, is a plus. In addition, candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills and have demonstrated superior analytical ability in their academic and career pursuits. Current Associates have come from diverse disciplines including computer science, engineering, business, and economics.
Our success is largely due to our company philosophy of "learning the business". While technical skills are essential, we differentiate ourselves by coupling our skills with an understanding of our complex industry. Securities transaction processing is a multifaceted business that touches almost every area in a brokerage firm. The better each Associate understands this business, the better the work we will be able to produce for our clients.
We expect our Associates to perform end-to-end project work. This means developing requirements, designing, building, revising, testing, implementing, and teaching for each project. We believe that this approach maximizes responsibility for each person, and removes the hurdle of departmental and interpersonal walls between Associates.
We expect our people to be self-motivated and to accept responsibility outside their consulting roles. Some work on recruiting, others on maintaining the web site, others on organizing company events. Because of our small size, there are a variety of interesting activities to pursue. We look for Associates who want to mold Galatea into the kind of place they really want to work.
